Back in the 50s, when I was a kid, we always had pets, including parakeets. It wasn't until many years later that I realized that keeping the birdcage on top of the refrigerator most likely contributed to the birds' short life spans. But while the parakeets were around, they brought joy into the kitchen, and we would always put little toys and treats in the cage.

Mom kept two of their favorite roly poly toys, a penguin and a parakeet balancing on a yellow ball. I don't remember if the penguin ever had eyes, but he doesn't have any now. Other than that, both plastic roly poly toys are in fine condition—which is amazing since they are almost 50 years old and survived several moves. Penguin: 2”H x 1”W.
