Group A – Four Birthday Cards

A1) Sepia-toned photo of a long-hair cat w/chalkboard. Woodtone border. One-cent cancelled Washington stamp. Postmark Oct. 27, 1913. Embossed, glossy front. Heavy cardstock. Split.

Made in Germany. Colotone Series No. 318.

Condition: Signs of wear along outer edges and corners, but corners are not bent.

Front reads: Many Happy Returns of Your Birthday

Back: To Lester, Geneseo, IL from Aunt Edna


A2) Raised, handpainted lavender flowers on off-white background, . White border. No stamp; pencilled in pricing: 3 for 5 cents. Handwritten date: Oct. 27, 1912. Embossed, glossy front. Heavy cardstock. Split.

Printed in Germany. B.B. London Series No B.410.

Condition: Coated front has slight cracking, otherwise, excellent.

Front reads: I'm Wishing, on so hard That You were with Me

Back: To Lester, age 4, from Uncle Howard


A3) Blue & white auto carrying purple pansies on gold-painted background. Blue border. No stamp. Handwritten date: Oct. 27, 1911. Embossed. Heavy cardstock. Split.

Printed in Germany. E.C.C. Series 24.

Condition: Can't tell if the marks on the gold-painted background are finger smudges or just the gold paint wearing off. Edges & corners show signs of wear; one bent corner.

A4) Watercolor winter scene against light woodgrained background. Thin white border. No stamp, but printed “Domestic One Cent, Foreign Two Cents.” Handwritten date: Oct. 27, 1912. Only the design around the winter scene is embossed. Heavy cardstock. Split.

Only identification: On front, bottom left – 708.

Condition: Minor signs of wear at corners. Oil from fingers on back, signs of finger smudges on front.

B1) Scenic painting, framed, and bouquet of flowers. Grey plaid background. White border is not centered. No stamp; imprinted notation: “Place Stamp Here-Domestic Canada Great Britain Germany One-Cent-Foreigh Two Cents” Handwritten date: Oct. 27, 1914. Embossed. Heavy cardstock. Split.

Domestic: Series Number 894 Copyrighted 1910 by J.J. Marks

Condition: Front is very good but back has a grease spot.

Front reads: Sincere Birthday Greetings

Back: To Lester from Grandma Roos


B2) Scenic painting with bouquet of lavender flowers against off-white background. Sprigs of white are scattered across the top inside corners. Gold gilt embossed border w/stylized green leaves. No stamp; imprinted notation: “Place Stamp Here. 1 cent in United States Canada or Mexico. 2 cent to all other Countries.” Handwritten date: Oct. 27, 1913. Embossed. Heavy cardstock. Split, but split is not centered.

Made in Germany. Design Copyright 1911 by A. Horwitz New York

Condition: Excellent.

B3) Bouquet of spring flowers. Light tan background. Gold gilt border. One-cent cancelled Washington stamp. Postmark Nov. 9, 1923. Textured front, smooth back. Heavy cardstock. Split.

Made in U.S.A. No other identification.

Condition: Excellent

C1) Scenic print and sprigs of yellow flowers. Off-white background. Blue-green “ruffled” border. No stamp. Handwritten date: Oct. 27, 1909. Embossed. Heavy cardstock. Split is slightly offcenter.

Printed in Germany. 1358 is only identification.

Condition: Excellent.

C2) Bouquet of fall flowers against off-white background. No border. One-cent cancelled Franklin stamp. Postmark Oct. 27, 1910. Embossed. Heavy cardstock. Split, but split is offcenter.

Only identification: Ser. 211

Condition: Ink spots (from other cancelled mail?) on front, slight grease stain on back. One corner is creased.

C3) Basket of violets. Offwhite background. No border. No stamp. Handwritten note: Lester's First Birthday which makes the date Oct. 27, 1909. Embossed. Heavy cardstock. Split.

Printed in Germany. Only other identifier is the word “Postkarte” printed in 17 languages.

Condition: Very, very good.

C4) Pink rose against a brown textured background. Uneven white border surrounds a grey woodtone frame. No stamp. Handwritten date: Oct. 27, 1911. Embossed. Heavy cardstock. Split, but split is offcenter.

Identification: The letters MB inside a horseshoe. 404

Condition: Very good but corners are beginning to show wear.

Condition: Damaged. Cracked coating and coating has peeled away from top left corner. (see pix)
